The Virtual Chapter Experiment (pre pandemic)

Presently, there are three virtual groups within the Affiliate movement. One is a contemplative virtual community; a second is the Hybrid (virtual & occasionally in person) Kenya community. Its members are in Kenya, Germany and the U.S. The third, actually the first to form, is primarily, a U.S. based community.  It has been in existence for over 5 years.  One member, Gail Kelley, from North Carolina, died unexpectantly about three years ago.  The seven remaining members are from Wisconsin (2), Rochester, NY, Ossining, NY, Missouri, Nicaragua (sometimes Michigan) and Connecticut.

When former Board chair, David Schaffner first suggested the possibility of virtual chapters, there were questions, even some pushback.  Could this be a viable and meaningful Affiliate chapter alternative model?  Since the thought first surfaced, COVID has made virtual meetings standard practice.  Apart from what the pandemic has triggered, the U.S. based virtual Chapter (actually, all 3 virtual chapters) has emerged as a caring, supportive and vibrant community.  At each gathering every six weeks, one of the members will lead the reflection and discussion. The substance and creativity of each theme and the depth of the conversation (with humor and heartfelt camaraderie throw in) has solidified the feeling of community.  It has often also worked to bring a sense of peace, connection, challenge and expansive faith to the group.
