Sharing Stories – Walking Life’s Pathways
…to have risked yourself for something that seemed to stand both inside you and far beyond you,
that called you back in the end to the only road you could follow, walking as you did, in your
rags of love and speaking in the voice that by night, became a prayer for safe arrival…
(An excerpt from Santiago by David Whyte)
Maryknoll Affiliate Mary Ellen Waite of San Leandro, CA initiated the most recent Real/Virtual Gathering with lines from David Whyte’s Santiago above. This is a different kind of Zoom “meeting”. Rather than focusing on topics or academic discussions, the group has decided to emphasize the community aspect and to get to know one another with more person-focused sessions.
After beginning with a reflection, anyone in the group who would like, can speak to a meaningful recent event, or, as Mary Ellen did, lines from a poem, or a passage from Scripture that spoke to her or him, etc. Inevitably, topics do arise (e.g., immigration, life commitment, love for the people of Guatemala, etc., etc.) but it is in the context of a story from the person’s life. That usually makes it especially engaging. There is also time built in for a person or two to briefly speak of their own life story.
These sessions are open to all Maryknollers. If this type of monthly, one hour gathering is something you’d like to consider joining, even to just see if you’d like it, contact Bob Short at: affiliatebshort@gmail.com
