Mission Work

While most activities take place within the local chapter, Affiliates are called to understand the lives, struggles, joys, and hopes of people in other cultures and lands. We can give back, using the skills and gifts with which we have been blessed and working for sustainable change in our world.

Mission service in another culture or country provides a rich opportunity for mutual exchange between the Affiliate and the host culture. In this time frame, only small steps can be taken in changing conditions of poverty and injustice. However, when Affiliates go with open minds and hearts, large steps can be taken to help bridge the gap between two cultures created by prejudice and misunderstanding.

Short-term service, whether for a few weeks or for several months, carries with it mutual obligations between the Affiliate and the sending chapter, the receiving community, the broader Maryknoll Affiliate movement, and Maryknoll, as a whole. Mission service also creates linkages and opportunities for ongoing relationships between the Maryknoll Affiliates and other Maryknollers.

Service requests are posted below and published in our newsletter, Not So Far Afield. Offers to serve are processed through the existing programs of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, Lay Missioners, and Sisters. The Executive and Regional Coordinators are able to help facilitate these connections.
