Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.” Over 50 years have passed since he spoke those words, yet the truth of them remains. It is never fully clear what will follow when we act on our faith, but not to do so is to miss out on wonderful opportunities for others and ourselves. You might choose to join an Affiliate Chapter near you; or, consider starting one if none is close by. Local initiatives as well as immersion trips overseas are other opportunities. The information that follows can help you to take the first steps.

While most activities take place within the Local Chapter, Affiliates are called to understand the lives, struggles, joys, and hopes of people in other cultures and lands. We can give back, using the skills and gifts with which we have been blessed and working for sustainable change in our world.

Mission service in another culture or country provides a rich opportunity for mutual exchange between the Affiliate and the host culture. In this time frame, only small steps can be taken in changing conditions of poverty and injustice. However, when Affiliates go with open minds and hearts, large steps can be taken to help bridge the gap between two cultures created by prejudice and misunderstanding.

Short-term service, whether for a few weeks or for several months, carries with it mutual obligations between the Affiliate and the sending Chapter, the receiving community, the broader Maryknoll Affiliate Movement, and Maryknoll, as a whole. Mission service also creates linkages and opportunities for ongoing relationships between the Maryknoll Affiliates and other Maryknollers.

Service requests are posted below and published in our newsletter, Not So Far Afield. Offers to serve are processed through the existing programs of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, Lay Missioners, and Sisters. The Executive and Regional Coordinators are able to help facilitate these connections.
