"Catholic inquiry to begin on cause for declaring Wilmington native a saint" was an artilce that appeared in Lumina News, a local newspaper in North Carolina. The article includes excerpts from an interview with (and a very nice picture of) Gaye Hieb, Contact Person for the Father Price Chapter in Wilmington.
Given that our November/December 2011 edition of Not So Far Afield had the theme of youth and the future of mission, the message of Pope Benedict XVI for the Celebration of the World Day of Peace could not have been better timed. The theme for this year's message is Educating Young People in Justice and Peace. You can read the entire message at:
Expanding our Social Networking presence, Maryknoll Affiliates are now on Google+. If you use Google+, be sure to check out our Google+ page.
During 2012, Maryknoll will offer a unique experience to young men and women to answer the call of Jesus and serve in overseas mission.
Prospective candidates for the four entities of Maryknoll will gather at different locations around the country for a day long program to discern a call to overseas missionary work. Some will come to contemplate a lifetime commitment as a priest, brother, or sister to witness and proclaim Jesus Christ to the poor overseas. Others will come to discern a three year commitment as lay missioners or to join the Maryknoll Affiliates.
All who attend these informative events will learn that Maryknoll is indeed a family committed to heed Jesus' command to go forth to all people everywhere!
Participants will have the opportunity to meet current and returned missioners; and listen to mission stories from those who have worked in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The day long encounter is an opportunity to learn about life as a Maryknoll missioner and begin to reflect on whether God is calling you to ministry in overseas mission.
The following is from Kimberly Bautista, the daugther of Maryknoll Affiliate Kathee Bautista:
I returned from Guatemala to Los Angeles a little over a week ago feeling overwhelmingly satisfied with our dating/domestic violence prevention campaign throughout 60 communities: we reached over 2300 audience members in Guatemala!Justice for my Sister resonated with all different types of audiences, from UN representatives to youth, to indigenous communities and religious women, to feminists, and foreigners. The protagonist Rebeca attended several screenings and it was very emotional for audiences to meet her. "We must all be Rebecas!" one audience member in Escuintla passionately shouted after a screening. The film is inspiring audience members of all walks of life to break the culture of victim-blaming and impunity.
The following report comes from Cristina Quintanilla Ortiz of the El Salvador Chapter and Maryknoll Lay Missioner Lary Parr through their organization involved in assistance with the victims of the floods in El Salvador, FUDESCA (Foundation for Development and Solidarity Castulo Antonio).
The reason for the following is to let you know that, due to the rains this week, we are red alert in El Salvador because it has caused landslides, floods, destroyed houses and loss of crops losses. Because of the incessant rains information is changing over time, gradually we are coming to realize that the extent of the victims and disasters that this phenomenon has left throughout the country. Many people have become newly homeless, without clothes, without food and belongings. Many of these are in the shelters. This situation led to the President of the republic declare the country in a state of national emergency.

Father Dennis Moorman, met with some of the Affiliates and some associates (inquiry) at Wrightsville Beach for a small mission talk about his journey, we had a blast with him. Everyone was so moved by his dedication, his commitment and certainly the diversity of his various ministries, it was an honor to host this gathering.
