In recent weeks a few among us have had the chance to visit with Jack Sullivan MM. Below is a brief letter from Ann Carr, who visited with Jack on Easter Sunday.  Following that is the poetic prayer written by Joe Veneroso MM, that Jack asked Bob Short to read at the end of their visit at Maryknoll last week

From Ann:

Please keep our dear friend and long time Maryknoll Affiliate companion, Jack Sullivan, close in heart and prayer in these days. Jack served as one of our Executive Coordinators in the early 2000’s and has always offered his support, creativity and deep commitment to our movement. He has been struggling with emphysema for the past few years and recently developed the flu followed by MRSA pneumonia. He has improved a bit, but remains on oxygen and has now been placed on hospice. Click on READ MORE to see the rest of the article.

I had the great gift of visiting with him on Easter Sunday while he was still in the hospital. Despite his physical diminishment, Jack was his usual self, passionately discussing questions about our world, the church, mission and evolutionary consciousness. He also expressed his deep joy and belief in the resurrection and his desire to return to Maryknoll. He is back there now, on the second floor medical wing in the Society Center. And although he cannot handle a high volume of visitors, it would mean a great deal to him if Affiliates would keep him in our thoughts and prayers

From Bob:

Ann’s characterization of her friend Jack above is so true.  To that could be added his humor, expansive vision and strong desire to see all of us as one Maryknoll family.

Prayer (Joe Veneroso MM)

Exiled from Eden eons ago Sojourning with Abraham

Delivered from slavery wandering around the world's wilderness

Taken into captivity in Babylon Till ewe return from whence we came

Each of us is called to leave Behind familiar faces and places

And go forth to foreign lands To find our way back home to God

We follow in the footsteps Of him who left heaven's glory

To dwell among the poor And oppressed of the earth

And set them free with the truth That they as sons and daughters

Of God in whose image they were made Are thus deserving of all help, hope

And dignity, for they too are called to go forth from poverty and despair

To dwell in the Promised Land

Till at length when this our earthly exile, Is at its end and we, weary but unbowed

Prepare for one final going forth To leave behind not homes or friends or family

But our bodies to return to the earth, We are confident the One

Who calls us to breathe our last in time Will lead us to eternity
