Question of the Month #1

What Ideas can you share on practical or creative ways that Affiliates can best connect to one another and to other Maryknollers in order to strengthen the bonds of the Maryknoll Affiliate movement?

Visit Affiliate chapters

 At Regional and National meetings

Our Chapter choses themes for the year to increase our awareness and to focus our meetings and actions. It would be great to know what other Chapters have done around our themes. This year they are prison reform and Care for the Earth, particularly as it unfolds in Monrovia with the Maryknoll Sisters Community and Pando Populus.

Prayer requests

Our Greater Los Angeles Chapter has chosen two themes for action this year--prison reform and Care for the Earth. It would be helpful to hear from others in the Maryknoll Affiliate community what actions they have taken in these areas that we might consider. This approach could be considered whatever actions a Chapter or individual Affiliates are exploring. [Submitted by Hugh Menton, This email address is being protected from spambots. • "Why do we want to strengthen the bonds of the Maryknoll Affiliate movement?
  • How to communicate if we do not speak the same language?
  • How to communicate if we live in different continents?
  • What do we have to change to promote this connection?
  • Why not to promote more the web page? An invitation to all to participate?
  • If this is a good idea!!! Who will be in charge in keeping it alive and let us know the results and make it work?

Instead of answers I formulate more questions to make us think and then the idea will come. Thank You!!!" [Submitted by Rosa Beatriz Castañeda de Larios, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ]

Form small groups that share email questions and responses that deal with their faith and actions. [Submitted by Larry Griffin]

Have a regional meeting/conference at least once a year in each region. The Portland chapter's "Non Violence Training and Regional Conference" in Nov.2018 is a good example.  [Submitted by Manny Hotchkiss, This email address is being protected from spambots. I believe you have enough data on the Affiliate movement in USA and around the world. For those who use cell phones and have WhatsApp it could be possible to connect to one another on personal issues. I suggest to create Chats of 12 participants of different parts of USA, including Latin America.  [Submitted by Rosa María de León, This email address is being protected from spambots. Well, this is a good start! I like the idea of a reflection question and the responses shared by all. I also like the idea of an Affiliate-sponsored service project. I regret that I could not participate in the one last year in Houston, but really liked the idea and hope that we can do it again in another place. The virtual book group was a nice idea that just didn't succeed. Maybe the book that was chosen was too heavy?  [Submitted by Celine Woznica, This email address is being protected from spambots. For the majority of regions and chapters distance prevents face to face meetings (the best way to connect). If there is a DESIRE to connect someone needs to take the initiative. The Albany NY chapter will be Skyping with the Guatemala chapter on May 18; emails were exchanged to determine the date and time, the agenda will follow. Again, someone needs to start the conversation and see where it leads.

Many years ago, I proposed we try to do an Affiliate version of a nation-wide effort at that time. Can’t remember it’s name, but it was something like “Make a Difference Year.” Some folks in my Chapter opposed the idea, apparently feeling they had chosen their own ministry and they didn’t want to do anything new. As I remember it, I had suggested that Chapters could collaborate with other chapters and together, choose a broad ministry to do for the coming year. An example might be an outreach to migrants. We would discuss, in our chapter, how we could individually express that topic, e.g. teaching English, accompanying migrants to the doctor, etc., tutoring migrant children struggling in school, etc. Another Chapter would choose their similar or different ways of outreach. Along the way, Chapters would be sharing ideas, fleshing out how they could develop this ministry. They would share what was working, what was not. The idea behind my suggestion was to create incentive to collaborate, share ideas, maybe even compete a little.  [Submitted by Kristin Neufeld, This email address is being protected from spambots. Requesting a Chapter Companion will help a chapter better connect with other Maryknollers.  [Submitted by Mary Moritz, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.]

Individual affiliates could post their name, tel# and email address within our internal website noting their key involvement or expertise concerning which they would welcome other affiliates to contact them concerning.  [Submitted by R. Guidry]

"As a group we come up with the following ideas:

  1. To use Facebooks pages to follow news and activities of other chapters
  2. To invite Regional Coordinator, a Board member or any affiliate from other chapter to visit our chapter to bring news, a new perspective and spark joy.
  3. To have a Live Conference on line, once or twice a year, where most chapters could join and follow the conference, who can be a Maryknoller and an Affiliate. Video conference or Webinar can be by Skype Business, YouTube live, Zoom or other platform.
  4. To have another regional meeting."

The following responses were collected at a Guatemala Chapter meeting and submitted:

That each member chooses a theme among three that occur and establish a union between those who choose the same topic. The three themes could be publishing in the bulletin.

That the Leaders communicate with other affiliates through WhatsApp, Facetime, any…

Communicating monthly by a newsletter, via internet.

Strengthen social networks and internet resources.

Carry out more activities between chapters, it can be by sectors: Central America, South America.

Create monthly campaigns (activities) in which all the affiliates work in harmony.

Unify emails.

Create a site on the web that is fed with photos or videos or articles.

A group of global WhatsApp.

The video calls (like the ones we held today at our meeting (Capítulo Guatemala 02/23/19): Richard Lessard (Affiliate Board) and Carlos Apcho, Peru) are a good idea. It would be a good idea for a person from another country to be present throughout the meeting and participate as an invite member.

Exchange of letters with different countries.

Global network of Maryknoll Affiliates, with newsletters and presence in various electronic social networks.

All affiliates be connected by WhatsApp, because it is more efficient and cheaper

Pray to stay united in good and bad moments.

Continue with phone calls, like the one we had today in the Guatemala Chapter.

Join all the affiliates on Facebook

Have a list of affiliate groups and assign a day or week to pray for that group.

Video conferences (establishing a communication between chapters or to receive general formation as affiliates.

Information through email (news, topics, know other chapters)

Share experiences, reflections, through emails or WhatsApp.

Share reflections through video with generating questions.

Share news and others through the media that we already have: Capítulo Guatemala Boletin, Bulletin NTLH.

Create a blog to maintain a constant, active communication.

Create a page on Facebook where all the affiliates are.
