Two Hundred Seventy Thousand (270,000)

Like many of you reading this post, I receive Richard Rohr’s Daily Meditations from the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC).  Periodically, I also receive CAC’s newsletter, The Mendicant.  The most recent newsletter is their 30th Anniversary Commemorative issue. Several entries therein struck me as meaningful for how we understand and continue to formulate our own mission and vision as Maryknoll Affiliates.

Here are a few things that struck me:

  • 270,000 – More than two hundred seventy thousand people now receive their Daily Meditations!! Something therein is registering with an awful lot of people
  • Alternative Orthodoxy - …a paradigmatic shift in how we understand our Christian tradition. Recovering wisdom carried for millennia on the margins of the institutional Church… more about developing contemplative seeing than professing “correct” dogma, more about participating in the sacredness of everything than joining a privileged elect…It is rooted in historical Christian orthodoxy and the life of Jesus, but can also see and honor wisdom from any denomination or tradition. (Michael Poffenberger, Executive Director of the CAC)
  • Mystical lineage - “Merton said that a lot of Catholics are losing their faith in church because the church is not bearing witness to its own mystical lineage.” When you do start to bear witness to it, you see this huge response – this hunger in people. (James Finley, faculty member of Rohr’s Living School)
  • On the edge of the inside – By the grace of God, we (CAC) are still in a structurally free position to be on the edge of the inside of the institutional churches and religions – and thus free to see and say things that often cannot be seen or expressed from institutional perspectives. I hope we share also always at the heart of the Gospel of Jesus. (Richard Rohr)

I believe that our vision, as one expression within Maryknoll’s expansive family; and, our unique structure as Affiliates, is in many ways very similar to what’s being expressed above. In that, we invite others into a place for the transformation and healing of ourselves and a planet that so urgently needs it.  Let us continue forward with hope and conviction.

So anxious to read this and share with my Presbyterian Good News Women Book Group. We just finished reading and studying Richard Rohr's book - "The Divine Dance". I also get the daily reflections from Richard Rohr recommended by the Wisconsin New Genesis Sisters here. The Spirit apparently has us all connected in the dance and flow of God's love!

I was also impressed with this mailing. Thank you Bob for commenting on it. We Affiliates are part of the flow, part of the dance, part of the movement.
