THE APPLICATION FORM FOR THE CONFERENCE/TRAVEL GRANT WILL GO OUT NEXT WEEK.
As with previous conferences, Maryknoll Affiliates Conference (MAC) 2017 attendees may apply for a “Conference Fee and Travel Grant” for the conference hosted by the Guatemalan Chapter, to be held November 9-12. This program is possible due to your generous funding of Affiliate operations the past few years and our Executive Coordinator’s careful management of your dollars.
The goal of the program is to encourage representation from as many as possible of the over fifty Affiliate chapters located both around the world and here in the U.S. We also hope that, with grant assistance, individuals who have not yet had an opportunity to attend an international conference will be able to do so.
With funds limited, we ask applicants to explore and consider all possible funding sources that may be available to them. For example, chapters might explore supporting participation through donation of frequent flyer miles and chapter member contributions. In 2014, over fifteen attendees benefited from grant assistance; we hope that as many or more will be assisted through the 2017 program. Applications are due by April 1, 2017. Depending upon funding availability, applications may be accepted after the April 1 dead line.
Once completed simply click on the SUBMIT button and it will be automatically sent to Bob Short

The quality and quantity of work done by the Guatemala Conference Committee has been extraordinary. Un millón de gracias!!
There will be a Memorial Mass on March at Maryknoll NY for all Affiliate who have passed on in recent years. Affiliate Board member, Russ Feldmeier MM, will be the principal celebrant.
This week we celebrate the passing of Bob Maxwell - December 29, 2016. Bob and his spouse Liz were long time members of the Cincinnati Affiliate Chapter. Below are quotes and photos taken from the beautiful booklet at the Mass (January 6th) celebrating Bob's life. At this posting, I'm not sure how much of the card was designed by Liz, but several of the quotes are hers. Is it fair to say that statements of love for one other are in many ways a statement of love and celebration for all of us?
"We're about to meet our Maker. I pray constantly. We'll be looking through new lenses." If we remember everything, our minds would be so filled with the past, there would scarcely be room for the present. We should consciously open our receptive minds to what is present." (Spoken by Bob while he had dementia)
Happy Foundation Day to each one of you. 105 years ago today three pioneer women, Mary Louise Wholean, Sara Sullivan and Mary Dwyer came to Hawthorne. And it marked the birthing moment of a new mission community. It was then that they began the journey, as Fr. Walsh called it, the journey of faith.
Our Foundation Day remembrance is closely related to Epiphany. This might be surprisingly to some but Epiphany is not one single event, but a series of events. The morning prayer of Epiphany refers to three mystery moments. It reads; today the Star leads the Magi to the infant Jesus. Today Jesus wills to be baptized by John in the Jordan River to bring us Salvation. And today water is changed into wine for the wedding feast.
During this week these events are remembered here but each of them celebrated separately. The Visit of three Magi is celebrated on this coming Sunday, officially named as the Epiphany. And today we read the Gospel account of Jesus’ baptism. The account of the miracle at Cana is read tomorrow.
So this morning I am going to take these three mysteries, as moments of one organic process called Epiphany and see how this process gives a different tone and shade to our Foundation Day remembrance.
Let us begin with the first mystery, the visit of the Magi. We know the story very well. Three Magi came from Persia, traveling possibly over 1000 miles, on Camels, a they came following a bright star. They recognized the Infant as the New Savior and Divine and honored him with gifts. This is the first Epiphany moment!
So what is new about this story? Let us visit the scene once again, maybe with deeper reflective consciousness. Three Magi have just arrived after a long journey through the desert. They are telling their stories that they are men of healing and transformation with backgrounds in alchemy, astrology/cosmology and medicine. They know the story of Buddha’s re-incarnation: that after 500 some years of Buddha’s death, a Flower star will appear and guide the searchers to the reincarnation of the Great Teacher. Truly the Star guides them to the New Born. In their telling of their desert journey, which started as a solo quest, but now became a communal process, the world view of the Magi is shifted: From re-incarnation to incarnation, and circular to evolutionary history. Through their reflective consciousness they become aware of a new cosmic relationship that included all, with the Stars and with the hidden power of water that gave birth to the star. In Jesus something new is emerging, a new consciousness, a new relatedness, a new intimacy of God’s presence. Through the desert they are led to the Living Water, to the Divine in the New Born child. A sudden insight into the divine reality! The first Epiphany moment!

As you are reading this, the MAC 2017 Conference - November 9 - 12, 2017 - is just under 10 months away. The Guatemala Planning Committee has already put in place all major elements of the Conference and those of us who have seen it are very impressed and very excited by the thoughtfulness and creativity of all aspects.
The theme is Buen Vivir - Living Life to the Full - and, as with all our international conferences, a primary purpose will be to bring together Maryknoll Affiliates (and other Maryknollers) from Chapters around the world to discuss the past, present and future direction of the Affiliates.
The MAC2017 website will be up by the end of this month with the registration form and other details. As you think of planning your airplane flights, know that the trip from the airport to the beautiful Verbo Encarnado venue (about 1/2 hour) will be arranged by the committee and is covered in the tuition. See http://www.verboencarnado.com.gt. Additionally, the Maryknoll Center House is very close to the airport and some will be initially taken there to wait for other passengers and then be taken to the venue. Excursion mission trips for those who wish to stay longer in Guatemala will also be detailed on the website. Scholarship details will soon follow.
Please give this once in a lifetime opportunity serious consideration.
Beth Begley, of the New Jersey Chapter, has held a strong commitment to issues of justice and peace throughout her adult life. Below is notice of an important vigil that she referenced from the GreenFaith movement.
If you have concern about the president-elect’s nominees for EPA Administrator and Secretary of State and their projected stance (in contrast to Pope Francis’ Laudato Si), on issues of climate and the sustainability of our home, planet earth, please consider the activity below as a way to affirm our vision for the earth’s future.
To plan a multi-faith vigil in the new administration’s first 100 hours, register for a webinar on
As part of the People’s Climate Movement’s (PCM) actions during the first 100 hours of the new administration, we want to help coordinate 100 multi-faith vigils around the country between Jan. 20-24. We’ll show, publicly, that we will not accept the Earth’s degradation and that we’ll stand together for a sustainable future. The vigils will kick off our planning for a major, national, distributed mobilization on April 29.

The Maryknoll Affiliate Book Group restarts in early January. Participants from last year’s group told us that it was a very positive experience for just about everyone. Not only was it substantive with a good deal of learning taking place, but in many ways it (all three groups) became a kind of virtual community with a sense of camaraderie and trust. Here’s what we propose for the next session:
· Meeting (call) times will be the same as before – see below. However, we will try to accommodate another time, if there are sufficient requests.
· Format – we will use the same format as last year: A weekly conference call using free UberConference with approximately 1 hour for each call. Participants will, if possible, take turns identifying 3-5 questions for each session that will be submitted 3 or 4 days before the upcoming session. Participants on the call are mindful to allow appropriate time for each person to speak. Participants will each obtain their own book. Also, we will limit the number of participants in any group to 12.
· Book Selection – after receiving over 25 suggestions from book group participants, we have listed two books to choose from – see below. Please choose your preferred book between these two. We will correlate the books chosen with the respective group, i.e., if, arbitrarily, there are 12 people in the Sunday group and 4 choose book A and 8 choose book B, we will go with book B for the Sunday group. We realize this could mean that you might want to change to a group that selected the book you prefer. This is not a perfect arrangement, but we will do our best to accommodate as many as possible. Note: ORBIS BOOKS provides a 40% discount to all Affiliate Book Group participants. Just mention "Maryknoll Affiliates".
· Expanding the participants – Please forward this notice to your Chapter, friends, parish community, etc. if you wish to invite them.
