Haiti: From The Frontlines

Written by

Renate passed on the following email noting that these are "Very interesting comments."

FROM THE FRONT LINES (Flavia Cherry)

It is good to see that some efforts are being made to reach women in desperate need, but those of us on the ground are yet to see this happen in many of the areas where there is desperate need for food and relief.  AID agencies MUST find a more humane way to reach out to the women and children who are most vulnerable and desperate.  I know that the need is great, there is no excuse for what is the reality on the ground here in Haiti as Caribbean citizens offered help and mmany have even been denied entry.  It is obvious that the aid agencies, (well intentioned as they may be) are unable to handle the scale of the problem here in Haiti.  So why are they not being inclusive and involving more Haitian and Caribbean institutions in the relief and recovery efforts?  Something is very wrong about the picture here in Haiti because while international agencies are dropping the ball in an attempt to monopolize aid efforts, Haitians are dying.  Apart from lines for women, there is an urgent need for volunteers to go into the camps to reach women, children, disabled and elderly people who are unable to move.

Haiti and Maryknoll Affiliates

Written by

While Maryknoll has never had an official presence in Haiti, many Maryknoll Affiliates have had connections there. Please click on "Read more" to see what some of them have shared so far. They have also made some suggestions for agencies to which you can send contributions to help. There are a number of lists out there that you can check out. Because of the devastation to the Catholic Church in Haiti, (see what was sent to us by USCMA) you can also be sure there will be efforts through local parishes and diocese.

We also invite you to share your own stories, connections, thoughts or concerns about what is happening in Haiti. Just click on "Add New Comment" at the bottom of the article to do so (you must be logged in) or add your thoughts and comments on our Facebook page.

Church loses in Haiti

Written by

The US Catholic Mission Association sent out the following news on Haiti:

A follow-up email can be read by clicking on "Read more…"

We have just received terrible news from Haiti.

In addition to the massive property destruction from the earthquake, the church lost our archbishop there and - so far - over 100 priests.

We are having a special noon Mass today for them.

This is the worst earthquake reported in Haiti in over 200 years.

News from Renate

Written by

We just received the following news from Renate Schneider. Those who know Renate know she has worked in Haiti. As you can read below, she has recently returned from there. We will keep you posted on anything else Renate might share.

Dear Friends,

I arrived in Chicago at one o'clock this morning. 45 minutes after my plane took off from Port au Prince, the earthquake happened. I am fine but devastated by the events. I was going to write a very positive report about my trip, mentioning many areas where progress can be measured, and now this. There had been progress made on infrastructures, roads were being repared and security was much improved. And then this. Neeedless to say I am devastated. I have been unable to get news from friends in Haiti, but even Jacmel, a seaside town has been hit, buildings collapsed and so far about 30 people died there which is quite a distance from PAP. As I know more I will let you know.

Let's stay strong and in prayer for the people of Haiti.
