Wholemaking permeated the Maryknoll Sisters’ General Assembly according to John Moritz, Maryknoll Affiliate and Southeast Regional Coordinator. John reports on his participation at the General Assembly in this issue. In our next issue, John Meyer, Phoenix Affiliate and Board Member, will reflect on the “Dream” of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers’ Chapter Meeting. The Affiliate Board also envisions our wholemaking and will be asking for Affiliate input.

This issue demonstrates that Affiliates are part of the wholemaking: in Chicago, sharing a Thanksgiving meal with Chinese visitors; in Cambodia, sharing time with missioners; and locals in Bolivia and Nicaragua sharing their time with children and pregnant women.

On the streets of cities across the US, Affiliates address wholemaking by recognizing our need for nonviolence and to care for creation.

Be watching for the launch of the new Affiliate web site, which acknowledges the whole of the Affiliate world and celebrates the crucial role of Latino Affiliate chapters.

With your help, Not So Far Afield aspires to be part of the wholemaking. Please send articles about your efforts to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Watch your mailboxes for the coming 2015 Appeal letter inviting you to help keep the Affiliates financially healthy.

Denver Affiliate Marie Venner, who serves on several professional committees related to climate change and has written passionately about it, asks: Are any Maryknollers planning on going to the climate meeting in Lima in December, 2014?

The Maryknoll Affiliate mission statement says that we Affiliates cross borders. This issue emphasizes some of the many ways we do that. Executive Coordinator, Bob Short gives a deeper explanation of the message of MAC 2014 and the New Wave, as do the Affiliates in the Spanish No Tan Lejos del Horizontes. Crossing Borders means new ways of seeing the world, resisting the injustices, working constructively to live new ways, engaging the power structures, transforming ourselves and being the new wave of mission.

We can cross borders electronically, too.  Almost 100 people have responded to the Affiliate Media Survey; We’ll report the results in the next NSFA issue.

Send us your comments and experiences crossing borders, or anything you see of interest to Affiliates at  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

With this issue, we send you the spirit of the Maryknoll Affiliate Conference (MAC 2014) at Stony Point and Maryknoll, NY. MAC 2014 set records: Affiliates from 35 chapters and 9 countries, about a quarter of them from Latin American chapters, attended. The enthusiastic Latin American Affiliates kept reminding us that mission looks different depending on where you’re standing. They said one of the blessings of Maryknoll was the recognition of the indigenous peoples as partners in mission.

The Albany NY chapter did a wonderful job organizing the Conference around the four pillars of the Affiliate Movement—Spirituality, Community, Global Vision, and Action—applying the theme of Fr. John Sivalon’s keynote talk, “The New Wave of Mission.” (Affiliates are part of that new wave of mission!) Key sound bites from Sivalon that spoke to me were, “I came that all may be One, as We are One,” and “The Big Lie of capitalism is that the human person is autonomous.”

Bill Hall gathered photos and information from many chpaters and incorporated them into an engaging DVD. Attendees viewed the DVD presentation of chapters’ various activities, and each person received a copy. We encourage local chapters to share the DVD at their meetings.

I urge you to read—and reread—Sr. Connie Posipsil’s Sending Homily, page 11, to sense the depth and breadth of the joy and energy of the Conference. As always, please share your hopes, joys, and mission work with us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Other exciting news: The Board has approved an update of the Maryknoll Affiliate web site. Our current website and communications will continue undisturbed until the new version is ready later this year. Affiliates will be notified both by email and in the NSFA when the change occurs.

We especially sense the Spirit when Affiliates are gathered. Read about the excitement when Maryknoll Affiliate small mission communities gather: at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress; in Lima, Peru, with the Niño Jesús Afiliados; in Boston; and of course, at MAC 2014, the big triennial Maryknoll Affiliate Conference at Stony Point, New York, June 19-22nd. The July/August issue of NSFA will be slightly delayed to include photos and stories from the MAC 2014. Please send your reflections on MAC 2014, or on your recent Affiliate gatherings to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We will see you at Stony Point!

We keep encountering Pope Francis in the press, surprising us with his eminently sensible statements. Look for more on Papa Francisco in this NSFA.

Thank you for “gathering” with us through the NSFA. With the help of today’s technology we can have virtual, electronic gatherings, whenever we want. Have you “Liked” the Maryknoll Affiliate Facebook page? Are you following it?

Future NSFA issues will cover the updating of the Affiliate web site to enhance our communications and the forming of our community. Please participate by completing and returning page 11 of this issue (pdf available at Maryknoll Affiliate Use of Media, which asks about Affiliate use of media.

Most of this issue of the NSFA relates to Father Jim Madden, MM, who passed away this January. He initiated our Movement and formed Affiliate chapters in the US and Peru. Even if you didn’t have the blessing of meeting him, we trust that you will be inspired by his article and the challenge which he wrote as his last words to us Affiliates. He envisions us growing, on a mission of love and life.

Please read Father Jim’s message in its entirety and meditate on your role in the aspects he lovingly details. Perhaps your chapter could reflect on them as the basis for an upcoming meeting.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014 Issue—Compassion

Written by

Compassion. It’s the theme of this issue, and the emphasis of Phase One of the JustFaith program. Compassion is a missioner’s hallmark and the first step to loving service. Appropriately, compassion is evident in the articles in this issue.

We feel a special compassion for Fr. Jim Madden who has done so much to spread and support the Affiliate Movement. A few years ago we roasted Sr. Ellen MacDonald as the mother of the Affiliate Movement. Jim Madden, who was co-coordinator with Ellen, should be considered our father. Remember him in your prayers as he deals with his illness.

Did you remember the Affiliates in your New Year’s resolutions? Are you a Facebook aficionado? Affiliates can post, like, and comment at our Facebook page: Could you help with our web page or newsletter? Perhaps you have a great Affiliate meeting topic to share with us for an EZ meeting for the NSFA (see the centerfold article)? Do mission from the comfort of your home!
