Working for Change

Fred Goddard – Philippines Chapter, Former Executive Coordinator

September 18, 2016—I know it’s a cliché title, but that is exactly what I have been doing since Jet and I returned to the Philippines four years ago in October.

Fred Goddard, center, “working for change.”

Soon after we arrived, I began working with MAGI (Managing Alternatives Group, Incorporated— This NGO provides services to other NGOs around organizational management, assessments, evaluations, etc. I worked with partners in the Philippines of the German donor organization MISEREOR to help them determine what difference their projects were making in the lives of the people with whom they worked. What changes did they observe?

Prior to January 2015, few people in the Philippines had heard of Mamasapano, a small municipality on the southern island of Mindanao...

Updated Website

After weeks of work, I have just switched over to our "not quite ready for prime time" updated website. I say "not quite ready for prime time" because there are still some things to do.

What does this mean for you and for the Maryknoll Affiliates? Most of the changes were "behind the scenes." It was in some ways like upgrading the operating system on a computer, like going from Windows 95 to Windows Vista. Just like on a computer, though, when you upgrade the operating system, you have to upgrade some of your programs. I did this for several reasons, primarily to make it easier for those who will be taking over maintenance of the website and to make sure that it is secure as we can make it.

NY Subway Christmas Party 2011

Margaret Meehan calling us forwardThe New York City Subway Chapter had their annual Christmas Party on December 16. Once again, Margaret Meehan proved to be the quitessential host, with a wonderful meal and a warm home. We are so grateful to her and to Tim Monaghan, our ever-present cook, and Margaret's right-hand man at these parties.

Check out the pictures on our Facebook page.

Remembering 9/11

Rembering 9/11 PosterThe New York City Subway Chapter came together for our first meeting of the year in Chinatown where we gathered for a wonderful lunch at the ABC Chinese Restaurant. It was a special gathering place as that was the last place where we were all together with Paul D'Arcy.

At memorial massThat was just the beginning of our time together. We then all walked over to Transfiguration Parish for a memorial mass celebrated by Maryknoll Father Ray Nobelletti MM. Transfiguration parish is just a few blocks away from the World Trade Center, so it was a significant place to be that day. Ray Nobelletti was a first reponder that day (see the article about that here). Father Ed Szendry MM helped concelebrate the mass.

You can see pictures of the day on our Facebook page.

On Sunday, April 17, the New York City Subway Chapter gathered at the Maryknoll Sisters, Maryknoll, NY, so they Sister Joan Peltier MM could be part of their meeting. At this meeting, the Chapter blessed and "sent" Rick Dixon, who will be joining the Maryknoll Lay Missioners this fall and will likely be going to Latin America.

Maryknoll Affiliate Jackie Maggiore joined the meeting of the New York City Subway Chapter to talk with us about

Jackie Maggiore

Carla Piette and her new book about Carla, Vessel of Clay. Jackie shared in a very personal way the life story of Carla, a friend of Jackie's since kindergarten. Jackie spoke of Carla's early life, what led her to Maryknoll and eventually to Chile and El Salvador, where she died in a flash flood.

It was wonderful to hear Jackie tell the story on this Mission Sunday. She wove in the interconnectedness of Carla's life with the story of Maryknoll and the history of Chile and El Salvador.

Awanda Whitworth

Awanda WhitworthIt is with great sadness that I write that Maryknoll Affiliate Awanda Whitworth passed away today, March 28, 2010. We received the following email from North Texas Affiliate Felcia Gehrig:

I just got word that Awanda Whitworth passed away around 6 pm this evening.  My parents had gone to visit her at the hospital yesterday but she was sleeping.  Her husband, Charles, then called to let my parents know that she passed away this evening.  I am shocked and saddened deeply. As I am sure so many folks are.  She will be missed by so many.  Her passion for mission has inspired and will continue to inspire so many folks, including myself.

Awanda was active for many years in the Houston Chapter. Always a loving, caring and dedicated women, she will be deeply missed. She may be a familiar face to many as she and her husband, Charles, appeared in the Mission Video produced by Maryknoll (the picture above is from that video).

You can read Awanda's obituary in the Houston Chronicle here.

Please keep Charles and their family in your prayers.{jcomments on}

Paul D'Arcy

Paul D'ArcyPaul D'Arcy, long-time Maryknoll Affiliate with the New York City Subway Chapter, passed away on March 24.

Paul could be considered one of the founding members of the Maryknoll Affiliates, one of the first to be involved in the movement through the New York City Subway Chapter. Only recently did I discover one of his early papers written about the Maryknoll Affiliates that we now use as one of our readings on Maryknoll Affiliate history (icon Maryknoll's Role Vis-a-vis Affiliates).

It is significant that Paul now shares the same day of his passing with Archbishop Romero. From now on we will remember two great men on this day.

Paul will be deeply missed by all of us in the New York City Subway Chapter, and it is a great loss to the entire Maryknoll family.

You may also download a tribute to Paul written by Eugene Kennedy here.
