My husband, John, and I met Marie and Lee Parmly when we made our Cursillo weekends some 40 years ago. Marie and Lee were active in Cursillo, Marriage Encounter, and the Charismatic Movement. We knew their five children were grown and they were retired, but we still marveled at all that they did in service to God.
Several years after we met them, Lee and Marie were in a serious car accident. Lee died and Marie was injured. Marie’s faith sustained her during this difficult time, and after she recovered, she felt called to be a Maryknoll Lay Missioner. Eventually, Marie convinced the Lay Missioners that she wasn’t too old.
Marie went to Mexico as a Lay Missioner, and we didn’t see her for a while. Then we heard that Marie had been shot in Mexico and was returning to the states to recover. Finally, she came back to Florida and we would see her from time to time.
We are posting our retreat schedule on our web page for anyone who might want to do something along these lines.
The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers hosted a centennial celebration at Resurrection Parish in Winter Garden, Florida on September 25 and invited many of their supporters in the Southeast United States to attend. Deacon Larry Hart hosted the celebration, assisted by Becki Hernandez. Deacon Larry works for the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers and is also part of the Northeast Florida Affiliate Chapter. Deacon Larry and Becki received additional help from five other Northeast Florida Affiliates who attended the celebration.
The Maryknoll Affiliates of Northeast Florida hosted their first Movie Night on January 17th, 2011. Due to limited publicity, there were only nine people in attendance to watch The Blind Side. However, this small group showed great enthusiasm as we enjoyed together this inspiring movie based on a true story. After the movie, we had a good discussion about what a selfless act the Tuohy family made, in welcoming a virtual stranger, Michael Oher, into their home and, after some time, into their family.
My husband, John, and I (pictured at right) tabled for Maryknoll at the Junior Division of the Knights of Peter Claver Conference, Gulf Coast Region, held in Jacksonville, Florida on March 5-7, 2010. The young men and women in attendance ranged from 7-18 while their chaperones were adults of various ages.
