On Saturday, September 25, 2010, I had the opportunity to attend my first “normal” San Diego Chapter meeting.  It had been more than two years since I had attended a monthly meeting without the focus being on conference preparation.  Unfortunately, Peggy was not able to join me at the Coastal Reilly’s (Marta & Charlie).  On a personal note, we ask for your prayers for Peggy who will be having a pacemaker implant on Wednesday, September 29.

Early arrivals, Bob Metzger, myself, Marta and Charlie shared our latest personal news.  Bob has been to Maryknoll twice this year and just returned from a visit with Fr. Tom McDonald.  He gave each of us a postcard with a beautiful aerial view of the Maryknoll Center.  Marta and Charlie showed photos of their Canadian Rockies train trip. Marta, Charlie, Pat, Karen, Bob, Jim, Erin and Joe were in attendance for the meeting.

Charlie showed the video “Join Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers in a pledge for  A Million Minutes of Peace” (see below).  We all read portions of Fr. Joe Venoroso’s “Reflection on Peace”. We shared on the need for forgiveness, our feelings of anger and frustration, including a discussion of the current Palestinian Israeli negotiations, Including a one state, as well as the two state solution.  We must not lose Hope!

I shared a report on the state budget crisis in California which is affecting the poor and needy as funds are reduced while people needing help has increased.

Erin shared an update of Fr. John Dear’s day in court. The judge, impressed by testimony of the witnesses called, decided he needed time to study the law on “trespassing”.  The case was delayed until next January. We must not lose Hope!

Pat reported on the Conference with special thanks to all who helped.  We had a positive financial result, noting the generosity of the participants.  There was a discussion about how the Chapter’s development was disrupted by the time and effort required to put on the Conference.  It was suggested that for future Conferences we consider emphasizing the spiritual aspect, perhaps a retreat.

The last item of business was the acceptance by Erin to be the Contact Person.  Pat was recognized for the many years he put into the position.  We agreed that the position of Contact Person will be considered yearly.  Erin and Spencer have submitted an application to join the Maryknoll Mission in Cochabamba, Bolivia sometime in 2012.

I closed the meeting with a reading of this past Sunday’s Gospel of the rich man and Lazarus, in honor of Nancy and Dick Bureson, Emeritus founding members of the San Diego Chapter.  They used that reading in their orientation day at the beach by the fence and the bullring in Tijuana.

The next meeting is Saturday, November 6th at Erin & Spencer's home. Karen Reilly has agreed to do the opening prayer.  Erin requested that everyone bring one of the handouts or reading materials from the recent conference for reflection and discussion.

Finally, a delicious lunch was served and the main topic of discussion was travel, recent and future.  It’s good to be home again.
