When the Night was in Silence

“When the night was in silence and the world was in the midst of itscourse……..” Wisdom 18:14

Ah, yes, a partial phrase from Scripture that I have always loved. It finishes with a powerful foretaste of Christmas. But for me right now, I recall how it set the mood for what I felt during a three a.m. trip, up a hill to the outhouse in Ngoswani. I had never, ever seen a more magnificent star filled sky. Picture a piece of black velvet covered with three thousand shiny diamonds, sparkling in pure radiance.

What a GIFT…..

For my eyes to behold…….
For my memory to store…….
For my very spirit to wear…….

I stood in absolute silence for a long, long time, turning around and around not wanting to miss a single star. Big Dipper, Little Dipper, Sirius, and even the Southern Cross was visible in that equatorial, southern hem-isphere. The Milky Way looked like thousands of gallons of a white, glossy paint had been spilt across the blacker than black sky.

I wonder if Vincent Van Gogh had seen a similar sky when he painted

STARRY NIGHT?

This BEAUTY should have been Gift enough. Yet one more piece of Scripture came to mind.

“HE COUNTS THE NUMBER OF THE STARS.
HE CALLS THEM ALL BY NAME…….” Psalm 147 – 4

Part of me wants to question the Creator of us all and of those stars. I want to boldly ask Him…………WHY? Why would He go to the trouble of counting and naming each one.

Modern computer calculations give an estimate of the number of the stars as ten to the twenty fifth power……….10 with 25 zeros after it… whatever number that would be! Our Milky Way alone is thought to have some 200,000 million……….two hundred thousand million……stars in it….of which our sun is one………is ONE!

Essentially a mortal man could not ever live long enough to count all the stars.

Perhaps our Creator did that numbering and naming ---just because He was able to do that. Or perhaps to remind us that if a single star mattered… mattered enough to be counted and named………..imagine what He felt for every single human being that He created……….EVERY SINGLE ONE!

I stood that night ,

In SILENCE

In total AWE…..

Enjoying my GOD MOMENT.

That gift of that particular night time sky is long gone. I can close my eyes right now, though and remember. So I shall have one more special

God Moment to enjoy. I can enter into another Silence using one more piece of Scripture….

BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD
BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM
BE STILL AND KNOW
BE STILL
BE……………………………………………………………………

Ah, not quite as profound as I would have liked it to be. I now have the song ‘STARRY , STARRY NIGHT ‘ playing in my brain……….and it is trying to compete with a STARDUST MELODY……………

A God Moment set to music was a special treat.
