The atmosphere at the Saratoga Polo grounds is friendly and relaxed a tribute to their owners. All spectators are encouraged to help replace the divots at the midpoint of the match and to visit the clubhouse afterward for a drink or to mingle with the players. Sportsmanship for the skills involved is cheered when a goal is scored, regardless of the team. Polo teams are handicapped prior to the match to ensure that the teams are evenly matched. Polo players are allowed to play for any team as long as their individual performance does not give the team an unfair advantage.
All who attended had a wonderful time. Many of the attributes that our MK group embrace are displayed by this wonderful sport. Players must rely on their horses and each other; their individual talents do not overshadow the team. The well being of the horses comes first as they are switched out every period (chuckker), and finally the entire match is about being there in the moment, utilizing the gifts of the horses and the riders, and transmitting the pure joy of the sport to the crowds. We surely felt at home.
