9 Months to MAC 2020

The MAC 2020 website will be up in September. It will include a registration sign-up, Conference schedule, Travel Grant Form, workshops, open space, Keynote speaker, unique elements and much else.  The Graymoor Spiritual Life Center is an attractive site and, for those traveling long distances, quite assessable from NYC airports by train.

Please mark the date (June 25-28) and plan to be with Affiliates and the Maryknoller family from throughout our Global home.

Question of the Month (QTM) #5

Question of the Month # 5

What story do you tell when people ask you about Maryknoll Affiliates?

We thank Tom McGuire of the Chicago Chapter for submitting this month's QTM!

Click here to answer the question.  We look forward to and thank you for your participation in helping to make our Maryknoll Affiliate movement strong

Question of the Month explained?

Do you ever wonder what other Affiliates think about a particular topic?  Curious about how alike or different Affiliates are from each other?  Are there things that other Affiliates are doing that could have some impact on you personally or your Chapter life?  As members of the Maryknoll Affiliates, we belong to different Chapters separated by distance, attitudes, traditions, culture and language, so these questions may be similar to questions we sometimes ask ourselves and/or other Chapter members.

Thank you to all of you who have already sent in information on volunteer opportunities at the border.  We have already received detailed information on several sites.  More information is coming in.  We will post the comprehensive list once we've collected the full complement.

Several Affiliates have expressed the hope of participating in this work and this information will be especially helpful.

maryknoll lay missioners

Ted Miles, Executive Director of the Maryknoll Lay Missioners (MKLM) shared their church date list.  If you are in the area of a given church date, you might want to attend, see if you might help out and otherwise show our solidarity with the Lay Missioners.

The list is long.  Check out church dates in your area for the rest of 2019 at: Maryknoll Lay Missioner Church Dates August-December 2019.

To date, 24 Affiliates have signed up to offer hospitality to Maryknollers.  The list of available homes covers a good part of the country.  Here's what we have so far:

Petaluma, CA, Clifton Park, NY, Littleton, CO, Jacksonville, FL, Hudson, WI, Portland, OR, Arroyo Grande, CA, Hartsdale, NY, Oak Park, IL, Weeki Wachee Fl, Salem, CT, Houston, TX, Denver, CO, Hatfield, MA, Phoenix, AZ, Southhampton, NY, Rochester, NY, Columbia, MO, Brooklyn, NY, Orange Park, FL, Raleigh, NC, Long Beach, CA

Thank you to all of you for your generosity!

SPECIAL - Katherine McLoughlin of the Westchester Chapter and with a winter home in Las Cruces, NM, is very serious about offering her house in Las Cruces (see link) for any Affiliates (Pax Christi also) who'll be volunteering with immigrants in the area.  Her house is about a 50 minute ride from the closest immigration center but offers a very peaceful & comfortable setting after being involved in the non-stop work in the immigration centers.  Thank you Katherine!  Link:

Something to keep in mind...

Maryknoll priest Joe Healey MM from Nairobi emailed the following:

Just wanted to keep you folks in the loop. We want the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice (IFTJ) that will take place at the Crystal City Gateway Marriott near Washington, DC from 16-18 November, 2019 to be a good example of the networking and collaboration of the whole Maryknoll family.

One suggestion is that the various Maryknoll entities, departments and offices (with others) team up during the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice (IFTJ) that will take place at the Crystal City Gateway Marriott near Washington, DC from 16-18 November, 2019. One of the main topics is “Environment.” The audience is Jesuit high school and college students.

Many plans are already underway. Orbis Books will have a table. The Maryknoll Lay Missioners will have a table. From my conversation with Chloe we are suggesting that the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns (MOGC) take the lead and apply for a Breakout Session (50 minutes) on Sunday, 17 November on a topic similar to “Climate Justice: Beyond the Plastic Water Bottle.” If you agree many of us can help: myself, members of the Nova Community, young people in the Washington DC area.

Affiliates (Albany, Central Coast, CA, Comunidad Misionera in Wilmington, DL, and more) throughout the country have gathered at different events in support of Immigrants and in protest of U.S Administrative policy in this regard.  The photo here shows 4 members from the Albany Chapter- (LR) Rich Lessard, Santa Orlando, Denise Lessard and Mary Beth Buchner.

4 Albany Chapter Members  Many Affiliates have already travelled to El Paso, Mccallen, and other areas in Texas to help with the migrants.  Others have have expressed a strong desire to do so.  If you have participated in volunteering for immigration in Texas, we'd very much appreciate learning some of the details in doing so...i.e., lodging, work load, your overall experience so that we can pass that on to others interesting in doing so. If you have already participated in that ministry and can provide some details for others who hope to do so., please send that (just a few paragraphs and/or a phone or email address) to Bob Short at This email address is being protected from spambots. Brazoria, TX Home Restoration - Part 2

         Interior - February 2019

As previously posted, last February members of the Houston Chapter - Bob & Ruth Kleeman, Dick & Judy Horstman and Fr. Gerry Kelley MM -  invited Affiliates from throughout the country to come to Brazoria, TX for a working retreat. In addition to the 5 Houston-based members 6 Affiliates from California, New York and Connecticut came together for the week. The work focus was on restoring the house (a mobile home) of Mrs. Sanchez.  The house had been decimated by the extreme rain and flooding from Hurricane Harvey in 2017.  The retreat focus was on creating a reflective, caring community.  That happened almost immediately.  A wonderful experience which, hopefully, will be repeated in various ways throughout the Affiliate world. The house restoration took a bit longer and extended months beyond the week of our working retreat.

The photo above is what we saw when we first arrived at the mobile home in February.  The following two photos were sent to us by Dick Horstman at the beginning of the week.  Mrs. Sanchez must be elated.
